How to use it
- Drop or paste An .srt or .vtt file, or a transcript with times like “0:01 Hello”.
- Choose and adjust Pick SRT, VTT or text. Move the timing, clean it up.
- Download or copy The new file is ready at once. Nothing is uploaded.
The tool spots the format by itself. It also reads the transcript you can copy from under a YouTube video (a time on one line, the words below it) and turns it into proper subtitles.
SRT, VTT and plain text: what’s the difference?
All three hold the same words and times. They differ in small details that players and websites care about.
SRT
VTT
TXT · Text
| Format | Use it for |
|---|---|
| SRT (.srt) | Uploading captions to YouTube, and most video editors and players |
| WebVTT (.vtt) | Videos played on websites, and YouTube too |
| Plain text (.txt) | Show notes, blog posts, quotes, searching what was said |
YouTube accepts both SRT and WebVTT files, and suggests SRT if you’re new to caption files.
Subtitles out of sync? Move them
If every line shows up a little early or late, the whole file is off by the same amount. Check one line against the video, note the difference, then move everything by that much: minus moves lines earlier, plus moves them later.
Arabic subtitles showing strange symbols?
When Arabic subtitles show up as boxes, question marks or symbols like ال, the file and the player disagree on how the letters are stored. Open the file here: older Arabic files saved in Windows-1256 are read correctly, and everything is saved back as UTF-8, which modern players understand. If an old TV still shows symbols, tick “Add a BOM” and download the SRT again.
Captions for your shorts
Subtitle files are for long videos. Shorts need captions burned into the picture: big, a few words at a time, the spoken word lit up, clear of the app’s buttons. Our guide to captions for shorts shows how.
